hot-air balloon Expectations
Hot-Air Balloon at sunrise
A sunrise hot-air balloon safari is one of the most memorable ways to experience the Serengeti. Floating quietly above the plains offers a unique perspective on the landscape, wildlife, and the sheer scale of this remarkable ecosystem.
While this optional excursion requires an early start, many guests consider it a once-in-a-lifetime highlight of their safari.
Advance reservations and extra fees apply, if you are not booked yet and would like to add this optional add-on to your safari, please let your trip manager know.
Before You Go
Balloon safaris depart before sunrise, so expect an early wake-up call—typically between 4:00 and 5:00 a.m., depending on your camp location. A balloon safari representative will drive you to the launch site in the dark, often with opportunities to spot nocturnal wildlife along the way.
Once you arrive, you'll enjoy coffee or tea while watching the balloons inflate. Before boarding, your pilot will provide a thorough safety briefing and explain what to expect during takeoff, flight, and landing.
During the Flight
Your flight will last approximately one hour, though the exact duration depends on weather and wind conditions. Because the balloon travels with the wind, the ride is typically smooth and surprisingly peaceful.
After landing
Upon landing, you'll celebrate with a traditional champagne toast (non-alcoholic options are available) before enjoying a leisurely bush breakfast in the Serengeti.
After breakfast, you'll reconnect with your Thomson Safaris guide and continue your day's safari.
What to Wear
Early mornings in the Serengeti can be cool, but temperatures warm quickly after sunrise. We recommend:
Dress in comfortable layers.
Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes.
Bring a light jacket or fleece for the drive to the launch site.
Wear a hat to help shield you from the warmth of the balloon burners overhead.
Don't forget your camera, binoculars, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
Is it right for you?
Ballooning is a gentle activity, but it does require a moderate level of mobility. Guests should be able to:
Climb in and out of the basket using footholds.
Stand for the duration of the flight.
Bend their knees and hold onto the basket during takeoff and landing.
For safety reasons, balloon safaris are not suitable for pregnant travelers or guests with significant mobility, neck, back, heart, or certain other medical conditions. If you're unsure whether the experience is appropriate for you, please let us know before your trip.
Weather & Cancellations
Balloon flights are entirely weather dependent. The pilot will only fly when conditions are safe, and flights may occasionally be delayed or canceled due to wind or visibility.
If conditions prevent your scheduled flight, the balloon operator will make every effort to reschedule your experience during your safari. If that isn't possible, you'll receive a refund in accordance with the operator's cancellation policy.
Helpful Tips
Reserve early. Balloon safaris have limited capacity and often sell out well before departure.
Charge your camera the night before. Sunrise light over the Serengeti creates exceptional photography opportunities.
Don't worry if you're mildly afraid of heights. Many guests say ballooning feels very different from standing on a tall building because there's no sensation of speed or swaying.
Every flight is different. Wind direction, wildlife movement, and the season all influence what you'll see, making each balloon safari a truly unique experience.
